January DISD Board Meeting - Live Blog

Board passes a 15-minute limit on total speakers on a single topic. Board President Jack Lowe walks out before the, now, 15-minute limited Skyline/Conrad speakers--but Hinojosa unlimits them!

Hinojosa stays after the meeting and is talking to parents/students (that, folks, is leadership). Lowe walked out because he was sick--meant no disrespect.

Tonight is going to be a night full of fireworks. All the media is here. Television trucks litter the parking lot (hey, it's an attempt at prose--give me a break!) and the auditorium is packed.

On the agenda tonight: Skyline/Conrad and Roosevelt.

There are 51 speakers to both agenda and non-agenda items. Virtually all of them are speaking about the Skyline cluster move we've been deep into on this website.

Promises to be an interesting meeting.

5:41 PM - It's Board Appreciation Month. Each trustee got a piece of artwork from students througout the District. Next is the reading of a resolution from Mayor Tom Leppert.

Next up a choir. The choir is excellent. You aren't here? You should be!

5:53 PM - The Superintendent's report. Topics: Keys to success for students and clear expectations. Lots of mention of "academic rigor"--a frequent and recurring theme in many of Superintendent Hinojosa's reports.

5:58 PM - Education briefing courtesy of Ron Price.

Dwaine Caraway and Larry Duncan just walked in and Jack Lowe introduced them. Caraway is scheduled to speak toward the end of the meeting.

6:01 PM - Business Briefing courtesy of Edwin Flores.

6:02 PM - Policy Briefing courtesy of Leigh Ann Ellis.

6:03 PM - Now it's the time we've all been waiting for--speakers to agenda items.

"I know we have alot of people from Skyline," Board President Jack Lowe said. Then he dropped a bomb on them. "When we have a major item, we can limit speakers to 15 minutes."

Tonight, however, Lowe is limiting Skyline speeches to 30 minutes. Guess he wants to get home in time to watch the sunrise tomorrow too.

However, this may not sit well with the Skyline crowd--and may, unfortunately, be viewed as a School District that doesn't want to "hear anything about it."

We'll see...

Right now, Ron Price is getting accolades (and tee shirts) from several of his constituents.

Next up... Aimee Bolender speaking about the devaluation of grading methods used to compute teachers CEIs. She asked that the proposal (before the board) be pulled.

Bolender also addressed the Skyline and Roosevelt issues.

"A successful bond election begins with happy voters at Skyline and Roosevelt."

Next up Stephanie Clark speaking on a "budget" item--and it quickly turned into a Skyline speech. Jack Lowe protested.

"I'm a proud parent at Skyline," said Clark.

Then she got back to the budget and what it has to do with Skyline. "Will the money be taken away from Skyline and going to Conrad?"

Pretty sneaky Stephanie!

Next up, Candace McAfee, speaking to the "budget" as it relates to Conrad calling the move of the clusters from Skyline to Conrad a "colossal mistake."

She complained that the parents, students and educators at Skyline "did not come first." "They do not seem to be top priority."

6:19 PM

Next up is Shalonda Jernigan speaking about the elevators at Skyline. She is asking whether the money to be used for the elevators will be put on hold given the move of the clusters to Skyline.

Next up a student who said "the elevators are the only thing broken" at Skyline to which a large portion of the audience broke out in applause.

Several people are deferring to the end of the program since Lowe made it known that no debate on Skyline/Conrad would happen in the portion of the program devoted to speakers on agenda items.

Cheryl Landman is up talking about "feeder patterns" and it quickly turns into a "moving clusters" speech. Lowe interrupted a couple of times telling Landman it was sounding like a Skyline issue--which is being postponed until the end of the meeting.

The golden 30 minutes!

Next up is Dale Kaiser speaking on grade inflation. This is the mandate that no grade lower than 50 be awarded to any student in any grading period.

Kaiser also brings up the problem with allowing students to retake tests to get higher scores. He believes it is a bad idea because, perhaps, students won't come to class knowing they can retake an exam later.

Kaiser then slammed the policy limiting speakers to 15 minutes--or the 30 minutes tonight.

"Each one should be given the courtesy of being heard."

And as far as Skyline (lots of people are sneaking in Skyline pieces), Kaiser said: "leave Skyline alone."

6:28 PM

George Rangel talking about high school redesign.

At Skyline (which surprised us!).

Rangel directed his comments toward Hinojosa and reminded him he was quoted as saying, "I won't tinker with Magnets." "I read the article again, and I didn't see 'except Skyline.'"

Ooh, Rangel's stepping across the line.

"I don't find you trustworthy," Rangel said to Hinojosa--who doesn't look happy right now.

At the close of his speech, the audience broke into applause.

Shannon O'Donnell is up speaking about the "Skyline Elevator." Quickly it turns into a "the District has allowed Skyline to become overcrowded and fall into disrepair."

"Skyline works despite the District's efforts to destroy it."

"Don't just cull us without consulting us."

"Skyline is super fantastic."

More mass applause.

6:34 - This concludes our speakers.

Lowe said he appreciated those who decided to wait. But wait...

A young lady approached the microphone protesting the Board's position of shutting down debate. "Can't you just let us all speak?" Lowe replied: "No"

Now there's debate over the policy that limits speakers.

Carla Ranger jumped in and called the policy into question.

Ranger points out that the policy limiting speakers on hot topics to 15 minutes (or 30 minutes). "Is there a policy that limits participation to a number of minutes?"

Blackburn points out that the policy being used to limit the Skyline speakers has not been adopted yet!

It is up for a vote tonight! It's pulled for a separate vote.

We'll see if it passes.

6:41 PM - The consent agenda. It passes. Next, are the items pulled for separate vote.

Next up: approval of a policy amending an item related to academic achievement--the one Dale Kaiser opposed earlier.

Blackburn: "Are we manipulating the official data?" "If the teacher's gradebook is the official record, I want to make sure we're not violating the law by changing the grade to 50."

Blackburn proposes a change allowing a principal to allow for extenuating circumstances--giving students who score low one semester to pick it up the next semester.

A lot of people are really opposed to cutting requirements. Several are saying "rigor"--a reference to "academic rigor" that the Superintendent embraces.

Leigh Ann Ellis protested that this policy was somewhat sprung on the board and asked for time to review this.

Denise Collier explained that this approval was needed tonight because the District is preparing the Spring registration procedures.

For 2009.

Blackburn's motion passes 7-2.

Carla Ranger is up. "I'm troubled," she said about the policy.

"What is the difference between taking a state championship from a school because a teacher changed the grade of a student?" "Giving the student a grade that the student did not earn?"

Ahh how things are intertwined. Ranger's comments refer to the recent issues involving Myrtle Dixon, Principal of Roosevelt High School, and the flap over grade changing.

Ron Price summed up the other side of the issue saying that students might not be able to recover from a 30.

Hinojosa noted that the greatest predictor of student success is the ability to pass the first 6 weeks. "Even with a 50, they have to score a 78 twice... and they still have to pass the course progress [test] at the end of the class."

Ranger is back in asking for any data correlating low dropout rates to those who get a grade of 50.

"These kids need a chance," said Nancy Bingham.

"You still fail with a 50," she noted.

Blackburn makes a motion to strike the paragraph placing 50 as a minimum for a 6 weeks grade. The vote: Blackburn and Ranger voted to strike it. Everyone else voted to leave it in.

Vote on the original policy to make 50 the lowest score a student can earn in any 6 weeks. The policy passes 8-1 with Ranger voting against.

Carolyn Davis, Dallas City Council member just arrived.

Nancy Bingham then picked on her husband, the Great Jimmy Bingham (in the words of another trustee)! We'll embarrass him a little more here too!

It's 7:30 PM. It's cold outside. 40 degrees with the wind blowing. Oh, thanks for the elbow. There's a board meeting going on.

More items on the agenda pulled for separate vote. However, we predict at least an hour debate on item number 5: limiting public participation and I quote:

"When large numbers (five or more) of individuals sign up to address a single topic the total time allocated will be a maximum of 15 minutes to make a presentation."

Likely to spark debate. Bet Carla Ranger votes against it!

7:54 PM - Here's we go! The "Golden 15" minute policy.

As predicted, Carla Ranger moves to strike the 15-minute provision. The audience breaks into applause.

"When the public comes to us with concerns," she said, "we should not put a time limit on what they have to say."

Blackburn: "If people take time to come to our meetings, we should listen to what our constituents have to say."

"It almost looks like we don't want to take time to listen to the public."

"Over the weekend," Ron Price said, "I really thought about what America stands for."

What we're saying, according to Price, is "we want the tax money but we don't want to hear from you."

"People are going to remember this around election time," said Price. To that, the audience erupted in applause.

"I take an affront to the accusation of being un-American," said Lowe.

With that, the vote to strike the 15-minute rule was put to a vote. It failed 5-4. People in the crowd said "we're going to remember that at election time."

It's a long night. Kent pointed out that the dallasisd.beloblog.com has pictures of the signs (at the top of this article) being developed. See them here.

8:17 PM - Told you it would be a long night.

8:37 PM - Now we're to the speakers on non-agenda items.

The crowd breaks out into boos as Jack Lowe walks out.

The meeting continues with Adam Medrano at the helm.

First speaker talks about how kids at her elementary school are getting sexually assaulted??? Huh?

Sorry, we'll be back to this planet in a moment.

8:50 PM - Now on to the Skyline clusters and, presumably, the 15-minute limit.

We're off...Aileen Mokuria

"What makes you believe that in one month you can destroy one program and make another that is just as successful?"

"Removing the clusters... will rally opposition to the May bond."

"Do not remove any clusters from Skyline" brought the audience to applause.

Next up: George Rangel.

And we're back to the Skyline "elevator" issue.

"We're not only having an up-and-down elevator problem, we have a move from one side of town to the other problem."

Lee Alcorn: "We're going to have to take our struggle to the streets and to the courts."

Applause erupts as another speaker says "I'm here to speak on behalf of Skyline." Lots of applause tonight.

Dwaine Caraway: "I'm sorry that Jack Lowe had to leave." Caraway pointed out that he is a graduate of Roosevelt.

"I stand here in stone support of Skyline."

"I'm here because of the community and the kids and parents of Skyline."

"When I saw this baby right here start crying when Jack Lowe walked out..."

"Listen to these people... don't treat them like cattle."

Caraway's time has expired but he insists on talking!

Who's going to stop him? Will they?

Someone in the crowd yells "heck no we won't go."

Ron Price to the rescue. He yields more time to Dwaine Caraway.

Caraway promises to take the "battle" to city hall.

The citizens of Dallas have been "totally disrespected" says Caraway.

Ron Price is interrupting--asking speakers to respect the rules of the Board.

Jerome Garza leaves.

Caroline Davis is up: "We're not working around this horseshoe right now."

"Parents you have to get involved and get down here."

Another parent is up:

"You gave up on Skyline, and I think that's a shame."

9:17 PM - and Dr. Hinojosa wants to stay here, after the meeting, and hear all the speakers. "If I have to go to Skyline tomorrow and talk to some other people... I will listen."

Hinojosa asks everyone to be respectful and adhere to the time limits.

Many speakers. Hinojosa is listening to them all.

The recurring themes: "the administration didn't listen to us." "These things were sprung on us without any discussion or participation."

9:45 PM - Another recurring theme: Jack Lowe walking out.

It is our understanding that Lowe actually had a good reason for walking out--and that it wasn't his intent to disrespect the Skyline stakeholders. Still, it's a shame he didn't explain his actions--and just walked out.

It looks very very bad.

Wow it's late.

9:50 PM - The speakers are done and Ron Price is up. He admonishes some of the adult speakers and praises the kids for their behavior.

Price says there is more than one way to address the Skyline issues.

"Destroying the first Magnet School in the nation is not the solution."

Price went back to behavior.

"I don't like the way my colleagues were disrespected here tonight," said Price.

"Don't be disrespectful to our superintendent."

Price asked the Superintendent to meet with the parents. Then he assailed proposals to bus the neighborhood kids to North Dallas.

"Please leave my family members from Skyline... at Skyline."

9:57 PM - Carla Ranger is on.

10:05 PM - Lew Blackburn tells the crowd that when "this board will not listen" you "come to me" and "I will show you how to get [your point] over." Still, obviously, on the topic of limiting speaking time--the big story of the night.

Blackburn turned his comments to Roosevelt. "Dr. Hinojosa, we must fix Roosevelt really soon."

Blackburn urged the administration to listen to the stakeholders.

"Thank you for teaching us a lesson tonight... on Board Appreciation Month."

10:11 PM - Meeting adjourned.

Hinojosa continues with the crowd

Hinojosa takes the mic and begins to explain why he did what he did at Skyline and Conrad.

"It's always been about safety at Skyline," said Hinojosa.

The second issue that led to the decision was crowding. "There were classes in the auditorium."

"Jack Lowe is a good man...I apologize for Jack...He was sick as a dog over here and that's why he left."

The fire marshal was also concerned about the overcrowding.

"I don't yield to mob mentality... but we want to listen to solutions that are viable," said Hinojosa.

"I am starting to hear viable solutions [here, tonight]... but mob rule won't work."

"If I need to come out tomorrow sometime, I'll come out and talk to Mr. Wright and members of the staff... but please don't threaten to withhold support for the bond."

Hinojosa commended the students for their behavior in front of the TV cameras and criticized the adults.

"I am ashamed of what is going to be on TV tonight."

"It's late, it's 10:30, and I'll take 2 or 3 questions."

One of the adults, a parent, thanked Dr. H for standing up and taking responsibility for the decision.

10:25 PM - Diane Birdwell is speaking. "The problem is... you see me blog... the reason I blog so much is because of the lack of communication."

"I want to talk about solutions," said Hinojosa.

A couple more questions and then it's out for the evening.

"It's late, thank you for staying, keep in touch."

Last Couple Years at Skyline

EVEN THOUGH MY LAST COUPLE OF YEARS AT SKYLINE HAVE BEEN VERY CRAPPY THATS MY SCHOOL, AND I LOVE IT, I WOULD HATE TO SEE IT TORN APART! I'VE GROWN SO MUCH AND EXPERIENCED SO MUCH I FEEL, NO I KNOW THAT THIS MAY WEN I WALK ACROSS THE STAGE I WILL BE A TOTALLY DIFFERENT PERSON THAN WEN I FRIST WALKED INTO THE HALLS OF SKYLINE MY FRESHMAN YEAR. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! DON'T TAKE AWAY OUR CLUSTERS THATS WHAT MAKES SKYLINE SKLINE IF YOU GUYS HAVEN'T NOTICED! BUT I JUST WANTED TO EXPRESS MY LOVE FOR MY SCHOOL AND SHOW MY SUPPORT!

SKYLINE OUR ALMA MATER
PROUDLY WE PROCLAIM!
OUR RESPECTS TO ALL YOUR STANDARDS
HONOR TO YOUR NAME!
GUIDANCE, KNOWLEDGE, INSPERATION
WE RECEIVE FROM YOU!
HAIL! TO THEE OUR ALMA MATER
HAIL TO THE SKYLINE HIGH!

Communication in DISD

Okay, Jack Lowe was sick, and I can respect that. Could he have spoken into the microphone, made his apologies and then left?

Why did Trustee Garza leave? It may have been because of the stance and behavior of Mr. Caraway, and we understand that, but to just totally leave? How arrogant he is. Do the people of his area/district knows how much disrespect he often shows at meetings?

He sits there with Trustee Flores, and they chat, look down and smirk as hard-working citizens come before the Board. I watched those two all night. They could not have been less caring in their body language. Is that who they want to represent their part of town? Is that the best you could find?

DISD is seen as dysfunctional because it is. It could be better, any organization could, but DISD EXCELS in doing the exact wrong thing every single time!

Lesson #1: If you have a lot of parents coming to meetings about something in DISD, MEET WITH THEM.

Lesson #2: If the media asks questions, ANSWER THEM. Just be honest for Christ sake. You are not at Los Alamos, and they are not the KGB.

Lesson #3: Brief your trustees ahead of time. It is an actual policy of DISD staff to purposefully withhold information on policies until just before the meeting? Last night, several trustees, several times, did not seem to understand what they were voting on. Why?

Lesson #4: Trustees should STAY after the meetings. There are plenty of rooms in 3700 afterwards. Citizens can call, email and write, but very often, they either hear nothing back, or they get the "company line" with no actual information in it.

Lesson #5: Listen to your gut. If you hear, month after month, that something is wrong, trust it. Central staffers want to keep their jobs, and they seem to always stutter and hesitate when called on a question. Curious.

Lesson #6: Intentionally meet with the unpleasant people, the ones who criticize you, the ones who yell at meetings. maybe they are just venting because the central staff is NOT telling you the full story, and that is their only time to clue you in. Look up at meetings!!

[Ed Note: Jerome Garza had just gotten back from a long trip and had very little sleep. He stuck around as long as he could. As to the rest: I think they're all learning.]

Hiring Freeze?

Has anyone heard of the hiring freeze in DISD?

Skyline Alumni Get With It!

Besides Diane Birdwell, there are not many people that are trying to save Skyline that are actual alumni of Skyline High School.

However you have one right here!

I am a part of the Class of 2007.

A lot of people have either seen me on television or at the football games because last year, as well as at different games this year, I was the flag runner for Skyline.

But if you ask any of the students at Skyline whether or not they will come back to their alma mater after graduation is long over, most of them say "No" or "Why would you want to come back?" "I've already graduated. I don't need to come back."

That's the wrong mentality.

As an alumnus of this great school, I love it to death! There are so many teachers there that helped me in tremendous ways my 4 years there.

In fact, I have a shirt that has a quote that especially works in this situation right now: "Once a Raider, Always a Raider" So true, so true! This is not just for the recent graduates of Skyline, this is for ALL graduates of Skyline!

[Ed Note: I must say I'm very impressed with the Skyline school spirit. It's nice to know that even with all the problems at DISD, there are school "families" who care about what happens.]

Mob Rule?

Thank you so much for the play-by-play commentary. It's much better than what we'll read in the paper.

I had an extremely talented government teacher 40 years ago who explained two theories of democratic representation. One assumption is that people choose representatives for positions such as the Board on the basis that the politician knows better than the constituents what is best for them.

The politician's superior wisdom, knowledge, or decision-making ability make him stand out from the common fray. It's clear to me which members of the DISD Board hold dear this idea of representation.

The second theory is that the people elect the representative as a conduit of THEIR values. The representative is supposed to stay close to the constituents and available for their input because the Board member would actually try to closely mirror their wishes. It is also very clear which Board members think this is their purpose in serving on the governing body.

The idea of mob rule, brought up by Hinojosa, clearly aligns him with those who believe that democracy would run amok if it is too closely aligned with the common folk, thus the policy to limit their input at Board meetings.

This behavior will be his undoing if he continues to keep a wide barrier in between himself and the multitudes who pay his extremely high salary.

Refusing to answer phone calls, refusing to actually speak to parents or wade into the waters of the multitudes is extremely elitist. Does he have the same apprehensions about having lengthy conversations with the members of Dallas Achieves or the Broad advocates? Does he refuse to answer their phone calls or speak with them? Heck no!

As far as the bond initiative, there is still no mutual agreement on how information is even communicated to the public on any initiative. And there is still that matter of Pcard Walmart shoppers which has never been appropriately addressed since they are still in their positions.

Ignoring the Pcard fiasco might be as convenient as ignoring all the parents and citizens of Skyline, but the ultimate consequences will be similar.

[Ed Note: I found it interesting that Hinojosa asked people not to threaten to derail the bond. I don't consider that "mob rule," I consider that politics.]

Jack Lowe and the Board

The fact that Mr. Lowe walked out should tell us all what is on his mind and in his heart.

The actions tonight to limit speakers should trouble us all.

I want to thank Dr. Blackburn and Ms. Ranger for their service on the board.

Allen, several of us have been warning you and telling you for months that we felt that certain high level administrators and even some board members are very disconnected with the teachers, students, and parents of this district, despite their statements to the contrary.

Not all of them, but some of them in key positions no longer have an idea what this district should be about.

All of the troubles with CEI's, with grades, and with what programs are offered at which schools speak to the level of disconnect.

This isn't a good sign about the direction Dallas ISD is headed.

If I lived in Dallas proper, I sure wouldn't vote for a bond.

Not one more cent until they all get their acts together and lead this district in the right direction.

By the way, as a side note, I saw a commercial tonight that caught my attention.

IBM was making fun of buzzwords in business by showing employees playing Bingo at a meeting.

One of the words made fun of was actually a phrase very, very, very in vogue these days at DISD: "value-added."

Makes me wonder.

[Ed Note: Yes, this was a troubling meeting. It is my understanding that Lowe had a "real" reason for walking out and it wasn't to diss the speakers. However, he should have taken 30 seconds and explained himself. The way he just got up and walked out was extremely troubling.]

Value-added

Dear classroom teacher and skyline alumni,

You have started a process that can succeed if you stick with it! Allow me to point you in the direction of a previous blog of Allen's from this summer entitled PORTABLES: AT ALL COST.

Please read the article again and pay close attention to what HONCHO,s told us in my neighborhood to our faces. Don't quit, don't give in, YOU CAN SUCCEED! After more than 10 yrs of abuse and disrespect of the neighborhood and the students and teacher,s and the snide little comments made, those portables were placed where they should have been 10 yrs ago.

Allen has said many times that to move an ocean liner with a row boat takes time, meaning change is slow in the district. That is true, BUT, you have to raise the ANCHOR'S FIRST. Hinijosa staying late to listen to people at the very least has greased the capstan and anchor winch. But you can't give up and walk away.

NO disrespect intended to any one but,I heard value-added, as a catch phrase for the first time over 20 yrs ago. Yep takes a long time to get that boat turned in the right direction, doesn't it.

Dr. Blackburn, Asset to DISD

Dr. Blackburn, You are an asset to the children of DISD. The compassion and concern you show for the students is clearly shown in the questions and statements you make in the monthly board meetings. Your concern for students learning and becoming successful is very clear.

Hang in there Dr. Blackburn. WE APPRECIATE YOU FOR WORKING FOR THE KIDS IN DISD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dallas ISD Board Meeting

Thank you for your comment. It's a long night! But, I appreciate the audience taking time to be here tonight. I am anxious to hear from the Skyline group. We'll see how they determine who will speak on the group's behalf.

[Ed Note: Yeah, I'm just disappointed that Jack didn't stick around. Maybe he'll be back, eh?]

Welcome Dr. Blackburn

Mr. Blackburn, you are certainly welcome to Buckner Terrace and Skyline anytime you want. Just contact the people who signed up to speak, and we will talk with you!

Leigh Ann Ellis and Adam Medrano came to Skyline last Tuesday when Mr. Price spoke. It was great to see them in person.

Three down, six to go. All trustees have students in East Dallas (attending Skyline), and it is time they realize that!

[Ed Note: I'm glad to see trustees crossing all lines and involving themselves district-wide. There are so many things that each can contribute to the whole district--not just their own areas.]

Dallas ISD Board Meeting

As a parent of A. Maceo Smith High School I decided to attend the meeting last night so that I could see if any more attention would be given to Roosevelt & Skyline teachers, parents, students and stakeholders than what was shown to the A. Maceo Smith Family when we attended several meetings last year in support of our principal.

Our kids were orderly, they spoke from the heart and several were so emotionally involved in the issue that they cried while speaking. Community members and teachers spoke while several board members carried on private conversations or looked extremely bored. Our presence there as an orderly body was never acknowledged verbally by Dr. Hinojosa. He never once thanked our very articulate, well mannered, orderly group for being there and he certainly never agreed to stay after a meeting or come to our campus to hear our concerns!!

I dare ask are the teachers, students, parents and stakeholders from Skyline more important to Dr. Hinojosa than those at Smith? Has he agreed to meet with the stakeholders at Roosevelt or are their complaints and concerns as minimal as those that Smith brought before the board? How does he choose what group is important enough to get his personal attention? Maybe we should have gotten Mr. Caraway to attend a meeting with us for Dr. Hinojosa to have taken us seriously.

Smith is now in a deep, black hole and maybe if our group had been a "chosen one" by Dr. Hinojosa, Smith would have a principal that met the prerequisite that the members of the "principal selection committee" set forth instead of a Dr. Hinojosa chosen principal.

Unlike Roosevelt Smith is a beautiful campus, there are repairs that need to be made but nothing like what needs to be done at Roosevelt. Similar to Roosevelt, Smith is in a crisis and is in need of a LEADER and not a DICTATOR! A leader that can be found on campus being a leader rather than attending meetings that are supposed to educate him on how to bring a low performing school up to standard. According to what we requested at our "principal selection committee" meeting we should have a principal that is already prepared to take Smith to a higher level academically, socially and morally (LOL).

Students at Smith, Roosevelt & Skyline are in trouble and have some of the same issues and concerns. Maybe we can pick 5 people to speak for 3 min. for all of us. Skyline does have an advantage that Smith & Roosevelt don't have...a LEADER that is doing more than tearing down the moral of teachers and staff and that has not forgotten the value of administrators, parents and teachers working together to achieve a common goal.

I am a parent that is devoted to the teachers and students of A. Maceo Smith High School. I would like to be as devoted to the current administration at A. Maceo Smith as well.

News Flash...I just read that Dr. Hinojosa has agreed to revisit the decision that he made to move clusters from Skyline. The A. Maceo Smith class of 2006-2007, parents and teachers would have felt honored if he had chosen to revisit his decision to remove Mr. Govan or if he had honored our verbal and written requests to allow Mr. Govan to participate in the graduation activities. Once again I ask how does he come to his decisions as to what group of parents and stakeholders concerns are worthy to be revisited?

[Ed Note: Why don't you get a bunch of parents/students together and sign up to speak at the next Board meeting? Get organized and prepare a concise list of issues and propose some solutions. I think after the beatings being taken at Roosevelt and Skyline, the administration is keen on listening.]

Dallas ISD Board Meeting

The student from Skyline gave a very impressive speech! That's what Dallas ISD is all about; students demonstrating their talents.

Dallas ISD Board Meeting

Thank you for showing your concern and interest in the Dallas ISD. Keep asking the great questions. I hope you get equally great responses.

[Ed Note: Thanks Dr. Blackburn. You honor us with your participation.]

Roosevelt

The Roosevelt situation has shown no improvement, according to the folks on the ground at the school. The frustration mounts.

I asked Leslie Williams for his timeline following his visit to Roosevelt, where he talked with teachers. He said he could not provide us one. He said he was taking each issue seriously… However, the process is taking too long.

It should not take this long to resolve leadership issues of this magnitude, affecting an entire staff and student body. It is no wonder the teachers are frustrated.

[Ed Note: You know, I'm getting concerned about administrators making promises, lip service, and then not following through.]

Harassment

The teachers who were at the board meeting last night are now being harassed by administration. This has gone on since 1st period. These are snakes...looking to kill...God help us...

[Ed Note: Somebody get us some specifics. Ask the teachers in question to send me a note via the Feedback link on the left. We need to get this on record and do a story about it. I can't believe that, with all the media attention, something isn't going to change at Roosevelt.]

Surprised?

Aimee is surprised that Williams won't speak about Roosevelt? I think people blogged a month ago that he wouldn't listen. So much for kow-towing to the administration again.

Price, Ranger and Blackburn!

Thanks Ron Price! You did us proud at the board meeting.

I wasn't too surprised by some of the idiocy I saw, as I'm a firm believer of the trickle down effect and see the idiocy that trickles down to the front lines everyday.

I was, however, pleasantly surprised by such a warm and welcoming show of support for Skyline from Carla Ranger and Lew Blackburn.

Truly impressive! As a tax-payer, citizen and educator I was comforted by Ms. Ranger's drive and commitment to do what is right.

Ms. Ranger, if you read this blog, please know that you have new fans at Skyline. Keep fighting the good fight!

Ron Price: History Teacher

Much like lawyers, business men, and lobbyist in Austin, the individuals (board membes) making the most important decisions in Dallas regarding education have not a clue.

I heard Ron Price speak at my HS that is 99.9% hispanic about how during the battle of the Alamo the blacks and Mexicans teamed up and fought together.... and blah blah blah..

We need people in place that are not only motivated but educated. No Fakers please.

And no I am not a racist.... before anyone reinforces that sterotype.

I just want intelligent people running our show.

[Ed Note: Remember that Ron didn't speak English until he was 11 years old. So it is conceivable he missed out on some very important years with respect to Texas history!

Yes, I'm being sarcastic.

Don't forget Medrano

Trustee Adam Medrano also stayed after, and we thank him. If only the other members saw fit to meet with people who waited over three hours for a chance to talk to the elected body who are supposed to care about students.

[Ed Note: Adam did an excellent job running the meeting after Jack got sick.]
