Attacks on Teachers
Dale 2008-02-16 00:30 DISD (Schools)
I watched Channel 8's report tonight on the substitute teacher that was beaten by a student in the middle of class and am just sickened by what is going on in our schools. At 5:00, Channel 8 had a report about fights at Seagoville High School that required the use of pepper spray to break up. Guess we had a really bad day in the DISD. There are several things that really bother me about the Skyline incident. The first is the viciousness in which this young lady attacked the substitute teacher. She can be seen literally grabbing the woman by the hair as the teacher tried to exit the room. Did the teacher mishandle the situation? Who knows. But, even if she did, there is NEVER a justifiable reason for a student to attack a teacher the way she did. The second thing that really gets to me about this is that NO OTHER STUDENT tried to step in and help this teacher! They were content to just stand by and watch, one of them videoing it on their cell phone. You would think at least someone in that room would have tried to get this student from continuing in her attack, but they didn't. I just wonder if the depictions of teachers in cartoons, tv shows and movies have something to do with their lack of concern for this teacher. Our children are seemingly programmed to have no respect for teachers from a very young age. Cartoons depict teachers as blumbering old fools to be gotten over on. TV shows and movies treat teachers the same, or even worse. I guess after seeing this for several years, these teenagers feel this way, too. The last thing, that the Dallas ISD Administration told the reporter that the substitute teacher would not be asked to come back and teach at Skyline High School. This could be interpreted many different ways, but to this viewer, I interpreted it that they believed that this teacher did something very wrong. Which, really shouldn't surprise me anymore. Seeing as our association had to defend a middle school teacher all the way to a TEA hearing to keep the Dallas ISD from firing her after she was attacked in her classroom by a student much larger than her! In this instance, the student jumped up and started choking the teacher in front of the class. The teacher grabbed him by his shirt collar, spun them both out of the door and into the lockers. He finally loosened his grip around her throat and other teachers heard her cries for help and came to her aide. The student said she abused him by putting him into the lockers. The Dallas ISD, in their infinite wisdom, then tried to fire the teacher! Unbelievable! This is just one of many cases we've dealt with in the last few years and I'm sure it won't be the last. Just sickening.... DISD Sucks
Wicked Witch (not verified) 2008-02-21 17:44
DISD is one of the lousiest districts in the country. They do what they want and screw the kids. Well as fir myself I actually hated attending DISD because DISD suck like dead pigs. So therefore I just say that I am glad that I didn't get the so called HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA. Because I didn't want a fancy piece of toilet paper. And besides my attendance was lousy. But thanks to roll call during either homeroom or first period because after that I was out of there. And there wasn't anything anyone could say or do to me after all the TRUANCY PIGS were either blind or stupid because they never caught me. So DISD could go belly up and that would make me happy because having DISD as you district means being taught from a bunch of brain dead teachers. I also enjoyed telling teachers where to go and how to get there with words that shouldn't be said publicly but I have the mouth of a sailor and get pleasure at insulting teachers. [Ed Note: Occasionally we post one of these unedited. I'm not sure what can be added here. I think this speaks for itself.] Teachers abused in DISD and district doesn't care

Exactly why I took my college degree, my work ethic, and commitment to education 10 miles north to a suburb. The students at Samuell High are violent, their parents are violent, noone can read by the time they get to high school, and the buildings are filthy. However, 10 miles up the road, I am treated like a professional educator, surrounded by students that are respectful, and that come with parents that actually give a crap about what they do from 8-4. Thanks DISD for showing me the way to Rockwall!! Are you kidding me?

Hahahaha! Dale, thanks for posting the "Wicked Witch"'s comment. I almost fell on the floor laughing. My favorite was "DISD suck like dead pigs". Wicked Witch, you are one classy human being. As "fir" you, maybe you should have stayed in school and earned your "so called HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA". It is "so called" that because you have to recieve education to recieve one. It's really cute how you put those periods before every conjunction...oh wait, you probably don't know what a conjunction is. It's quite sad that you get "pleasure 'AT' insulting teachers". Maybe you should get pleasure "at" going back to high school, and listening to those "brain dead" teachers who earned a college degree and are actually doing something constructive with their lives. What do you do for a living, Wicked Witch? Hopefully nothing that involves interacting with other people. Thanks for the laugh though! [Ed Note: See... our readers tow the line on letting folks get away with (or not) things!] In Wicked Witch's Defense

In Wicked Witch's defense, typing "fir" is a somewhat reasonable mistake just because the keys are right next to each other. If he's typing fast and not paying much attention, he might do that. However, if he rereads what he wrote, he should spot the mistake fairly quickly. Spelling

Hello, anonymous reply to the Wicked Witch...it's "i" before "e" except after "c". [Ed Note: Sorry, I usually catch spelling errors. You wouldn't believe how many we get from teachers even! With this one, however, I felt it was important to post it unedited.] Spelling is not the subject here

The Wicked Witch is so obviously a set up to get people riled up, why bother to reply? Sue the DISD, Sub!
Anonymous (not verified) 2008-02-17 09:24
...And people wonder why teachers join unions! It isn't to "protect our jobs." It is to protect our lives! The sub is entitled to have the DISD handle Workman's Comp, and she needs to file a claim. Maybe the more claims are filed on DISD when a student attacks a teacher, the TEA may see a problem with DISD. Maybe if a lawsuit is brought against the DISD for failing to protect her at her place of employment--and Allen, you said you know of teachers who would love to tear DISD a new one, well--get them on it! Finally, the Birthday Money On the Shirt thing is pure ghetto. It is not a "sign of bringing wealth or good luck," as Civale said, but a way to hustle money from everyone around them. It is disgusting how kids come up to everyone they know, stick out their chests and DEMAND money because their mother gave birth! Maybe the DISD should ban this practice under dress code, as now this is a distraction to the learning environment. Violence at Skyline

I am a senior at skyline and its not all of what people make it out to be. This incident with the birthday money is something that just so happen to get out into the open. What about the time when the girl in the cafeteria got her head bashed into the "unbreakable" window, which broke. Or what about the numerous amounts of blacks versus Hispanics fights we've endured. Maybe we should talk about how students stand at the top of the stairs and throw locks that go on lockers at teachers heads. And please don't blame Mr. Wright he's new to this he's trying the best he can. It just so happen that he walked into the mess that Mr. Williams created. But sadly to say my last four years at skyline sucked and with this being my senior year it really sucks thats why i'm happy this is my last year, because i'm ready to go G-O! How Sad!

How sad that our students and teachers can no longer feel safe at their jobs and schools. Our district has created a bunch of "enablers." We enable our kids to be given grades they don't receive fairly, we enable our kids when we continuously bail them out of every incident rather than have them accept the consequences. Who taught this child, and I will refer to this person as a child, because no grown-up in their right mind would do what this student did in front of a group of other people. Who taught this child that it is ok to abuse someone like this? I can tell you, it all begins AT HOME...Wake up parents because the next person could be you...Teach your children right from wrong... Why didn't other students help?

In these days of idiotic "zero tolerance" rules, had any other student stepped in, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him then get suspended for fighting. Seagoville High School Incident
A Classroom Teacher in Dallas (not verified) 2008-02-16 09:41
I was embarrassed as a sat and watched one student and her mother talk to reporters. The mother said they had just moved here and her daughter told her mother she had never seen anything like this. Unfortunantely, I am hearing more and more from my colleagues that they have fights at their schools that they believe are racially motivated. It is a sad commentary on the state of our school district that some students don't feel safe at school and some teachers don't feel safe at school. A side note--will the teachers who called 911 from Seagoville High get into trouble??? Seagoville Mom
Anonymous (not verified) 2008-02-17 09:28
I saw a Seagoville mom on tv who actually understood and supported the spraying of mace after her daughter told the reporter that it wasn't needed. Parents need to explain to the kids that they are not the arbiters of "what is needed" during a riot. That spray will make you cough and cry, but it will not kill you. If you don't want to get sprayed, then maybe you should move AWAY from a fight. Instead, most students want to see what is going on and move TOWARDS trouble. Good. Get sprayed then. [Ed Note: Well put. Maybe when there's a fight, you shouldn't be near it!] "No Comment" Orders
Anonymous (not verified) 2008-02-16 14:23
I am a teacher at a DISD school who was told yesterday by an administrator "When the media comes around, just say 'no comment.'" From looking at the news, I could have been from several DISD schools that encountered trouble on Friday! Why tell me to not to admit to anything? I didn't do anything wrong!!! DISD continues to disavow any trouble - whether it's with administrators, teachers, students, budgets, credit cards, school board members, etc! I think I need to teach in another district! Do ya think??? Leaving DISD

I used to be proud of working for the great “Dallas Independent School District" but not anymore. I wouldn't enroll my dog in to that district. The schools are not safe, the principals are incompetent, and it is plagued with corruption. The teachers are excellent and they are making the best out of a bad situation. The children are obnoxious and disrespectful; but the teachers are still trying to educate the children who could care less about being educated. It’s embarrassing to be a part of a school district that is heading for disaster and I am leaving this year because I don't want to risk being stigmatized. This district has inspired me to become a superintendent and I am not going to stop until I reach the top. On my way out, I am going to write a book about the big "Dallas Independent School District" and it will be a best seller because the world is interested in what goes on in inner city urban schools. Get out while you can, if you plan to make a name for yourself. I will definitely see you in the crossroads because I am going to change the way American schools are operated and that's a promise. Good luck to you in your endeavors and maybe you will see me on Oprah. It doesn't take much to make a difference in the lives of today's youth, all it takes is someone who is destined, dedicated and determined to change the lives of children who are forced to attend school in the public sector. This is my pledge to the children, of the State of Texas. I am a catalyst for change and a change is going to come, for I am the sparrow that is watching over the children. [Ed note: Ahh, future activists...] Buh Bye!
Still Crazy after all these years in DISD (not verified) 2008-02-17 19:38
Dear Anonymous, Bitter
Anonymous (not verified) 2008-02-17 19:04
Why so bitter? If you're so unhappy...do us a favor and leave now! Your negative experience isn't the experience of all of us in the district. Superintendency, huh? Let's see if you can run a school district this size in a better fashion...No, it's not a perfect system, but once the negative influences leave, maybe then we can truly get to the work of educating the future! Didn't Mean to Offend
Anonymous (not verified) 2008-02-19 18:16
I didn't mean to be offensive or step on any toes. This is how I feel and not how anyone else feels. However,I do have a right to express my opinion. In closing, if the shoe fits, wear it. Was I speaking of you? Maybe or maybe not. Have a good life !!! Can it be run worse?
Anonymous (not verified) 2008-02-18 23:30
Why slam the one who is leaving? Really, you think the district is being run WELL right now? Could it get worse? Yea, wait two months. It will. Get worse. You know it. You just know it. As far as I am concerned, the "negative" ones in the district are the ones who lay it all at the feet (and on the backs) of the teachers only. Is it our fault kids come to school not ready to learn? Is it our fault they are running low on PAPER PRODUCTS in the DISD right now? Toilet paper, copier paper, paper towels? Is it our fault that they won't tell the truth to the taxpayers about problems early on, but try to conceal them? And when it does get worse, they act surprised? Is it our fault that they refuse to engage parents in the big decisions? Is it our fault? |
