Trapster: Cool Mobile Phone Service of the Day

Well, ran across a free service called Trapster. In a nutshell, it is an application for your iPhone (and others) that allow you to transmit the location of a speed trap when you pass one.

The information is compiled in a database and shared with other folks.

The interesting thing is that there seems to be support from police departments for these types of services.

The web page of a similar paid service, PhantomAlert seems to list a few quotes from police agencies praising the service.

Still, Trapster does have a few detractors. Among them Washington D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier who called the service "cowardly."

Sounds like a revenue issue as opposed to a safety issue, eh?

Nowadays you have to think

Nowadays you have to think more about the others than yourself when you're driving. You can easily die like an innocent fool. So I think a device like that is an infraction and will only encourage speeding.

have you noticed

The Police Chief acts as if being cowardly is a bad thing. Cowardice may be a bad thing in her profession but as a civilian, it has saved a lot of lives and ticket fines.

Anyway, have you noticed?

Traffic seems crazy lately. Has anyone noticed the craziness? It's like driving in Atlanta or in a 3rd world country. Lot's of bubba's in thier big-ass duelies hogging the road or racing each other. People not giving others the right of way. We are supposed to drive friendly in Texas.. but I guess the big city attracts drivers from less road friendly states.

The most deadliest creature on the road is not the road rager waving a 45 at you. (Perhaps in California this may be true; however, in Texas, the Castle Doctrine extends to travel and you should be equally armed as well when you are in your vehicle and traveling.) The most deadliest creature on the road today is the distracted soccer mom on her cell. They are more likely to bump into you and/or leave the scene of the accident as you lie helpless and bleeding on the road.

thing for Tat. You got red light cameras - We got Trapster.

So let the games begin!

(Seems like a fair exchange to me)
